Fixed-Term Contracts

Fixed-term contracts are permitted in Singapore, but after three months of service Workers will be covered by the Employment Act and subject to the protections/entitlements therein. Therefore, generally, the same notice periods are required to terminate a fixed-term contract as an indefinite contract.

Worker Classifications

Workers are differentiated between workmen (e.g. 'blue collar workers'), non-workmen (e.g. 'white collar workers'), and managers and executives.

Probationary Periods

Probationary periods are permitted and unlimited in Singapore. Notice is still required to terminate the employment relationship, but it can be shorter than the usual terms.

Holidays

In Singapore, Workers recognize 11 paid public holidays. The President of the Republic of Singapore can also declare any day to be observed as a public holiday in addition to or in substitute of the 11 standard days. Workers required to work on a public holiday are entitled to an extra day’s salary or can agree to a day off in lieu. If a manager or executive is required to work on a public holiday, they should receive time off in lieu.

Vacation

Workers are entitled to 11 to 14 days of paid outpatient leave and 45 to 60 days of paid hospitalization leave per year. Unpaid time off allotments must be specified in the employment contract.

Overtime

Workers covered by Part IV of the Employment Act may not work more than 72 overtime hours per month. Overtime must be paid at 150% subject to caps.
