When Are 1099s Due in 2026?
For most 2026 information returns, the key deadline is February 2, 2026, but the exact date depends on the form and whether you are furnishing a copy to the recipient or filing it with the IRS. Form 1099-NEC is due to recipients and the IRS by February 2, whether you file on paper or electronically. Form 1099-MISC has different deadlines: some recipient copies are due February 2, while those reporting rents, royalties, prizes, and certain other income are generally due February 17. The IRS filing deadline for Form 1099-MISC is March 2 on paper or March 31 electronically. These dates reflect weekend adjustments to the usual January 31 and February 28 deadlines, so identify the form and the task before marking a due date on your calendar.
2026 1099 Due Dates at a Glance
Use this table to distinguish the main federal deadlines. The recipient-copy date and the IRS filing date are separate obligations, even when they fall on the same day.
| Task | 2026 deadline |
|---|---|
| Furnish many 1099 forms to recipients, including Form 1099-NEC | February 2, 2026 |
| Furnish certain Form 1099-MISC copies reporting rents, royalties, prizes, or other specified income | February 17, 2026 |
| File Form 1099-NEC with the IRS, on paper or electronically | February 2, 2026 |
| File Form 1099-MISC with the IRS on paper | March 2, 2026 |
| File Form 1099-MISC with the IRS electronically | March 31, 2026 |
January 31, 2026, falls on a Saturday, so deadlines that would otherwise fall on that date move to Monday, February 2. The usual February 28 paper-filing date for Form 1099-MISC also falls on a Saturday in 2026, moving the deadline to Monday, March 2. The IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC explain the applicable filing dates and requirements.
Furnishing a 1099 and Filing It Are Different Tasks
Furnishing means providing a copy of the information return to the person whose income is reported. Filing means submitting the required return to the IRS. A business can complete one task and still miss the other, so track recipient delivery and IRS submission separately.
For example, sending a contractor a Form 1099-NEC by February 2 does not by itself establish that the IRS filing was submitted. Keep the delivery record and the IRS filing confirmation as separate items in your records.
When Is Form 1099-NEC Due?
Form 1099-NEC reports nonemployee compensation, including qualifying payments to independent contractors. Learn more about nonemployee compensation and the payments this form reports. For 2026, both the recipient copy and the IRS filing are due February 2. The date applies whether the IRS filing is made on paper or electronically, as explained in the IRS instructions.
Because the recipient and IRS deadlines coincide, late preparation can put both obligations at risk. Review payee records and payment totals before January so there is time to resolve missing addresses, incomplete taxpayer identification information, or discrepancies in payment records.
How Form 1099-MISC Deadlines Depend on the Payment
Form 1099-MISC reports several types of miscellaneous income. Its IRS filing deadline depends on the filing method: paper returns are due March 2, 2026, and electronic returns are due March 31. The date for furnishing a recipient copy depends on what the form reports, rather than on a single deadline for every Form 1099-MISC.
Forms reporting rents, royalties, prizes, and certain other income are generally due to recipients by February 17, 2026. Other reportable payments may have the earlier February 2 recipient deadline. Forbes’ overview of 2026 W-2 and 1099 timing summarizes the recipient dates. The payment category and box reported matter: a rent payment and a different reportable payment can use the same form but have different recipient deadlines. Check the applicable box and the IRS form instructions instead of assuming one date applies to every Form 1099-MISC.
Other Common Recipient Deadlines
Many common forms, including Forms 1099-NEC, 1099-INT, and 1099-DIV, are generally due to recipients by February 2, 2026. Certain Form 1099-MISC copies have the later February 17 deadline. These are recipient-furnishing dates; do not assume they are also the IRS filing dates. Confirm the instructions for the specific form and income reported.
How to Prepare for the Deadlines
A year-end process that starts before January makes it easier to meet both recipient and IRS deadlines. Use a checklist that separates the form’s preparation from its delivery and filing:
- Review payee records early. Confirm each recipient’s legal name, mailing address, tax classification, and taxpayer identification information. Compare the records with contracts and accounts payable data.
- Identify the correct form and box. Match each payment to the appropriate form and reporting box. For Form 1099-MISC, the box can affect the recipient-copy deadline.
- Set an internal deadline before February 2. Completing review in mid-January gives the team time to correct records and prepare forms before the first major deadline.
- Document recipient delivery. Use a delivery method that provides a record of when the copy was furnished. Keep the record if a recipient reports that a form is missing and a replacement is sent.
- File with the IRS by the applicable date. Form 1099-NEC is due February 2. Form 1099-MISC has different paper and electronic filing dates, so track the method and deadline for each filing.
- Retain supporting records. Keep form copies, payment documentation, filing acknowledgments, and delivery records together so you can address later questions or discrepancies.
What to Do If a Deadline Is Missed
If a deadline has passed, prepare an accurate form, furnish any missing recipient copy, and submit the IRS filing as soon as possible. If you find an error after filing, determine whether a corrected information return is required. The next step depends on the form and the error, as well as whether the recipient copy, the IRS filing, or both were affected. The IRS instructions provide form-specific filing and correction information.
Keep 1099 Reporting on the Year-Round Calendar
Maintaining payment records and collecting accurate payee information before work begins can prevent a January rush. Add review dates to the year-end calendar and check the current IRS instructions before preparing forms, especially when a Form 1099-MISC box determines the recipient deadline.
