Fixed-Term Contracts

Fixed term contracts are allowed in North Macedonia for a maximum duration of 5 years. Contract will automatically convert to indefinite contract if Worker continues to perform work after the fixed term expiry date. 

Holidays

Workers in North Macedonia are entitled to 11 public holidays. If a Worker performs work on a public holiday they are entitled to compensation at no less than 150% of base hourly wage. 

Vacation

Workers are entitled to 20 or 26 working days per calendar year depending on years of service. The duration of at least one annual leave period must be at least two consecutive work weeks. Unused annual leave must be paid out at termination. 

Probationary Periods

Probationary periods are allowed for up to a maximum of 6 months. Workers can be terminated within their probationary period and are entitled to three working day notice. 

Sick Leave

Workers are entitled to compensation for up to 30 days of an illness. Workers will receive 70% of the average North Macedonian salary for the first seven days, 80% for days 8-15, and 90% for days 16-30. If the absence lasts more than 30 days, the Worker will receive compensation from the Health Insurance Fund

Working Hours

A standard work week in North Macedonia is 40 hours per week, usually 5 days a week. Workers are also entitled to a premium for work performed on weekends and holidays of generally 150% of the Worker’s rate of pay. 

Overtime

Overtime is not to exceed 8 hours per week on average over three months and a maximum of 190 hours per year. The rate for overtime hours is generally paid at a minimum of135% of the Worker's rate of pay. Workers are entitled to a bonus if they work more than 150 hours of overtime in one year while not being absent on more than 21 days. 

Termination

A Worker must be notified in writing and provide the reason for the termination. The minimum notice period or requirement for pay in lieu of notice is 1 month and 2 months in the case of certain collective dismissals. If the termination is related to a violation of work duties or working order, the contract can be terminated without notice. 

Resignation

Worker must provide one month's written notice of resignation.
