Fixed-Term Contracts

Fixed-term contracts are allowed. There is no minimum duration and they can be renewed indefinitely. Any termination information must be clearly stated in the contract.

Probationary Periods

Probationary periods are permitted and generally are a minimum of 3 months, which can be extended to 6 months. Termination during a probationary period can be effective immediately, with just cause.

Holidays

There are 14 public holidays in Trinidad. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on a Monday. Workers performing work on a pulic holiday are paid at a rate of 2x their regular rate.

Vacation

Annual leave is granted after one year of continuous service. Workers are entitled to 14 days (two weeks) of vacation annually after 1 year of service. It is common practice to increase the amount of leave based on years of services. Leave may carry over from year to year if the employer chooses, or paid out at the end of the year if the worker does not take the vacation. Unused annual leave is paid out at termination.

Sick Leave

After six months of service, workers are entitled to 14 days of sick leave per year. This is paid leave. A medical certificate is required for sick leave of greater than 2 days.

Working Hours

Working hours are 40 hours per week. General practice is 8 am-4 pm M-F with 1 hour lunch.

Overtime

Overtime is any time worked over 40 hours in the week. It is paid at a premium unless the worker earns more than 1.5x minimum wage. Overtime rates are 1.5x for the first 4 hours, 2x for the second 4 hours, and 3x for all time thereafter.

Mandatory Bonuses

There are no mandatory bonuses in Trinidad

Termination

Just cause needs to be provided in order to terminate a worker. If the worker is permanent, verbal and written warnings must precede the termination. Notice periods are provided in the employment contract and are at the discretion of the employer. However, the norm is 30 days. Severance may be provided if the appropriate procedures are followed. If a position becomes redundant, the relevant notice along with severance pay must be provided.
