What is People Management?

People management is the process of leading, supporting, developing, and organizing employees so they can perform their jobs effectively and contribute to an organization’s goals. It includes everyday responsibilities such as setting expectations, giving feedback, managing performance, resolving conflicts, supporting employee development, and building productive working relationships.

People management is usually carried out by supervisors, team leads, department managers, and other employees who are responsible for the work and development of others. Effective people management considers both what needs to get done and what employees need in order to do it well.

What Does People Management Include?

People management includes setting goals and expectations, assigning and prioritizing work, giving employees feedback, coaching and developing employees, recognizing strong performance, handling  workplace conflicts, supporting employee wellbeing, communicating organizational changes, helping employees understand their roles, delegating responsibilities, having difficult workplace conversations,  supporting hiring and onboarding, and helping employees develop their careers.

Examples of People Management

A marketing campaign deadline is approaching, but one employee is struggling to complete their portion of the project, a manager might:

  1. Meet with the employee to understand what's causing the delay.
  2. Clarify the expected outcome and priority.
  3. Determine whether the employee lacks information, resources, time, or skills.
  4. Adjust workloads or remove unnecessary roadblocks.
  5. Provide coaching where needed.
  6. Agree on a revised action plan.
  7. Follow up on progress.
  8. Give feedback after the project is completed.

The manager is still responsible for getting the project finished. The difference is that they're managing both the work and the person responsible for completing it.

Qualities of a Good People Manager

A good people manager helps employees understand what's expected of them, gives them enough support to succeed, and holds them accountable for their work. Qualities of a good people manager include clear communication, listening before making assumptions, setting realistic expectations, holding employees accountable, recognizing good work, give employees appropriate autonomy, handle conflict professionally, remain consistent, build trust, support development, and model the behavior they expect from their team.

Common People Management Challenges

Common people management challenges include poor performance, conflicting personalities, unclear expectations, managing former peers, too much work, and avoiding difficult conversations.

Is people management an HR skill?

Yes, but it isn't limited to HR professionals. Managers throughout an organization need people-management skills because they're responsible for employees' everyday work and performance.

Why is people management difficult?

People management is difficult because employees have different communication styles, skills, motivations, needs, and working styles. Managers also have to balance employee needs with business priorities and accountability.

Strategies to Improve People Management

Strategies to improve people management include holding regular one-on-one meetings, making expectations clear, giving feedback more frequently, and asking for feedback about your own management.

Hold Regular One-on-One Meetings

Consistent conversations give employees a predictable opportunity to discuss priorities, roadblocks, feedback, questions, workload, and development.

Make Expectations Clear

Describe the behaviors you're looking for rather than solely stating taking ownership, communicating more, and being more proactive.

Give Feedback More Frequently

Feedback is usually more useful when it's close to the behavior being discussed. Employees shouldn't hear about six months of accumulated problems during one annual review.

Ask for Feedback About Your Own Management

Employees may have useful insight into whether their manager communicates clearly, changes priorities too frequently, delegates effectively, provides enough context, or gives useful feedback.
